GISTs, or gastrointestinal stromal tumours, are uncommon tumours that develop when cells proliferate uncontrollably and abnormally. GISTs can originate from any point in the gastrointestinal system, ranging from the oesophagus to the anus. The majority of them begin in the small intestine, while over half begin in the stomach. And the GIST may vary from benign to highly malignant tumours.
There are some persons who have gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) but no symptoms. Rather, their malignancies are unintentionally discovered during examinations or procedures for another cause. The following symptoms might be experienced by other people:
reduced hunger, fatigue, stomach aches, Reduced weight, blood vomiting, Stool containing blood, blockage of the bowel, trouble swallowing.
GIST tumours can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal system, although they typically begin in the stomach. The optimal method of removal depends on the GIST’s size, location, and stage. For GIST excision, they are wide range of surgical alternatives, such as:
Laparoscopic surgery: With 3 to 4 keyholes, this minimally invasive procedure eliminates small tumours, resulting in quicker recovery times.
Local wide excision: In this procedure GIST is removed and a tiny portion of the surrounding tissue if it is small.
Partial gastrectomy: A portion of the stomach is removed during this procedure.
Partial intestinal resection: By excising a portion of the intestine, surgeons can remove GISTs that are situated within the gut.
After surgery patients may require chemotherapy also.
