A partial or whole blockage of either the large or small intestine is referred to as a bowel obstruction.
Causes -
May be caused by 1) adhesions 2) tumours 3)obstructed hernias 4) ingested foreign bodies like dentures
5) gallstones- GALLSTONE ILEUS 6) worms etc.
Symptoms-
Patients may have abdominal distention,vomiting,abdominal pain and not passing motion/flatus.
Treatment
Usually treatment depends upon the cause. In case of obstructed hernias emergency surgery is performed to relieve the obstruction. In cases with adhesive obstruction initial medical management may tried, failure of medical treatment may require surgical intervention either by LAPAROSCOPICALLY or by open method. In case of obstruction by tumours, emergency surgery and RESECTION of the segment of intestine with tumour is performed.
