A bowel perforation is a hole that occurs in the gastrointestinal tract and it can arise in the stomach or the small intestine or the colon and the intestinal contents and the intestinal juices leak out from the perforation into the peritoneal cavity leading to peritonitis and severe pain and threat to the life of the patients. Intestinal perforation is an emergency and patients has to be operated immediately.
Causes-
Includes 1)perforation of duodenal or gastric ulcers 2)perforation of tumours 3) diverticular perforations.
Treatment
Usually surgical management, the perforation is closed either with LAPAROSCOPIC or open method and in patients suspected to have tumour or cancer, RESECTION of the involved perforated segment may be required. Sometimes EXTERIORISATION of the bowel, like COLOSTOMY or ILEOSTOMY may be required.
