Gastrointestinal Bleeding

Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) indicates a digestive tract problem.In any of the digestive organs, GI bleeding may happen. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is defined as bleeding that happens in the duodenum, stomach, or esophagus. Lower GI bleeding is defined as bleeding in the lower small, large, rectum, or anus.

Causes Of GI Bleeding

There are several reasons of upper GI bleeding, including:

ulceration in the stomach,esophageal vein enlargements,Tears in the esophageal veins(VARICES),tears in the esophageal walls,duodenitis with gastritis,consumption of foreign bodies,tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

Causes for Lower Gi Bleeding are, Diverticular disease, Inflammatory bowel diseases, Constipation,Anal fissures,Haemorrhoids, Presence of any Polyps,Abnormal growth in the colon,Infection or Inflammation of rectum can cause bleeding.

Symptoms Of GI Bleeding

If bleeding originates in the upper GI tract or stomach, faces or stools may turn black and sticky, resembling tar or there may be frank blood in the motion, or they may vomit out fresh blood or vomit with black particles (coffee brown vomiting)If patients have hidden bleeding, patients may have dizziness. Trouble breathing. Losing consciousness. Ache in the chest. Stomach ache, bleeding may indicate a potentially fatal illness. Emergency medical attention is necessary.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis includes History collection, Physical examination, Blood test, stool test,Endoscopy, Colonoscopy,Flexible sigmoidoscopy, CT scan, MRI scan.

Treatment For GI Bleeding

Treatment depends upon the cause of GI bleeding. Usually medical treatment with PPI,hemostatic agents,blood transfusion are tried,failure to respond to medical treatment may require Endoscopic intervention,angioembolization or surgical intervention.
