What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is also called Keyhole surgery or Minimally Invasive Surgery or Minimal Access Surgery. Usually, the term laparoscopic surgery is reserved for keyhole surgery or minimal access surgery done in the abdomen and the term. In laparoscopic surgery, surgery is performed by making small key holes or small incisions in the abdomen through which a telescope and various instruments are introduced and surgery is done through these holes. In open surgery, a big incision is made to perform the same surgery.
Compared to open surgery, laparoscopic surgery is safer, as it reduces the time spent by the patient in the hospital or on bed rest, faster recovery , less pain and the occurrence of incisional hernia is low.
