Liver Disorders

a) Fatty Liver

The liver is the largest solid organ in the body. It aids in nutrient absorption, energy storage, and toxin removal in the body. When there is a deposit of fat in the liver it becomes fatty and enlarged , the patient has fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is very commonly seen nowadays. There are mostly two kinds:

Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease-Mostly caused by diabetes, obesity, etc.Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is more commonly seen now a days.

Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease ( Alcoholic steatohepatitis)-This is caused by regular ingestion of alcohol, may lead to LIVER FIBROSIS,CIRRHOSIS

Normally depending upon the severity there are 3 grades, and usually diagnosed with ultrasound of the abdomen, fibroscan,Liver Function Test-LFT.

Usually treatment with some medications, regular physical activity, alcohol abstinence and diet modifications. Here are some General Dietary

Guidelines for individuals with fatty liver disease.

Limit saturated and trans fats-Choose healthy fats,Focus on lean proteins-Increase fiber intake ,Limit sugar and carbohydrate intake,Limit salt intake,Control portion sizes ,Stay hydrated, Limit Alcohol consumption, Incorporate physical activity.

b)Ascites

A build-up of fluid in the abdomen is called ascites. It often occurs as a consequence of cirrhosis of the liver. Ascite symptoms are brought on by a combination of portal hypertension decreased liver function and decreased albumin. Portal hypertension is the term used to describe high pressure in the portal vein, which delivers blood to the liver. The veins leak fluid into the abdomen, where it collects due to the high pressure.

Signs Of Ascites –

Abdominal pain, Blood in stool or dark coloured, Blood in vomit,Build up of fluid in abdomen, Swollen legs and ankles, Breathing problem.

Treatment:

Usually treated with diuretics, salt and fluid restriction, albumin transfusion and aspiration of ascitic fluid in case of excess fluid accumulation.

c) Chronic Liver Disease

In this case, persistent and recurrent injury causes long-term liver damage. Long-term consumption of alcohol and persistent viral illnesses like hepatitis C or B and fatty liver may be the source of the damage. Chronic liver disease can result from the inflammation (damage) of the liver caused by fatty liver disease over time. Another factor contributing to chronic liver disease is fat buildup in the liver caused by long-term diabetes.

d) Cyst Of Liver

Liver may develop fluid-filled sacs called liver cysts. Liver cysts are almost generally benign (noncancerous). Few cysts enlarge to the point of producing symptoms. However, some genetic disorders that might lead to liver cysts may need to be treated.POLYCYSTIC LIVER DISEASE is usually congenital and associated with polycystic kidney disease- HYDATID CYST of LIVER is caused by infection with echinococcus.

e) Haemangioma Of Liver

Usually asymptomatic and diagnosed by routine ultrasounds ,these are benign conditions which result from dilated blood vessels and require no treatment, however giant haemangiomas may require surgical interventions.

f) Choledochal Cyst

This condition occurs when the bile ducts (tubes) that transfer bile from the liver to gallbladder and intestinal becomes hugely dilated and is known as a choledochal cyst. This usually congenital but manifests only late in   life. Patient    may present        with   recurrent     pain   and    fever  and jaundice-cholangitis and usually requires surgical interventions.
