Liver Cirrhosis

Liver cirrhosis is an irreversible scarring condition that harms the liver and impairs its functionality. Liver failure may result. Fatty liver progresses to liver fibrosis which leads to cirrhosis. Chronic liver damage over a long period of time leads to cirrhosis. The most frequent causes are drugs and alcohol, viral infections(hepatitis B and C), and metabolic abnormalities.

Stages

There are two stages of cirrhosis:
The liver cirrhosis disease worsens with time as more and more scar tissue forms. Patients may not notice it too much at first as the body adjusts to compensate for the decreased liver function. This is called Compensated Cirrhosis. People with compensated cirrhosis are those who do not exhibit any disease-related symptoms. But eventually, as the liver function continues to deteriorate, patients will start to notice symptoms. Individuals are said to have Decompensated Cirrhosis if the disease is so severe to the point where the liver is experiencing problems and is exhibiting signs of the illness. Usually, cirrhosis leads to an increase in portal pressure and PORTAL HYPERTENSION.

Symptoms

Usually may present with swelling of the abdomen and the legs and jaundice sometimes may present with GI bleeding symptoms.

Treatments Of Liver Cirrhosis

The course of treatment for cirrhosis differs depending on what initially caused it, what symptoms you are dealing with, and how far along the illness has advanced. Medication, lifestyle modifications, and surgery are all forms of treatment. Doctors may suggest certain drugs, including beta-blockers or nitrates (for portal hypertension), based on the cirrhosis’s underlying etiology. They could also suggest using drugs or antibiotics to cure hepatitis. The doctor would probably tell the patient to quit drinking if alcohol use is the cause of the cirrhosis. A low-sodium diet could also be suggested if the patients have ascites.

Surgical Management - Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is one of the final alternatives if the cirrhosis has advanced to the point where medication is no longer effective.
