Dr Kumaragurubaran
Surgical Gastroenterologist, Advanced Laparoscopic, GI and Robotic Surgeon, and Gallbladder, Hernia & AWR Specialist at Billroth Hospitals, Shenoy Nagar, Chennai.
Profile
Dr Kumaragurubaran is a Senior Surgical Gastroenterologist, Advanced Laparoscopic, GI and Robotic Surgeon practising at Billroth Hospitals, Shenoy Nagar, Chennai. He is a Gallbladder, Hernia and AWR (abdominal wall reconstruction) specialist, with 28 years of surgical experience.
His practice covers both the medical and the surgical side of gastroenterology. That matters in a field where patients are often moved between a physician and a surgeon before anyone settles on a plan: here the assessment and the treatment sit with the same consultant, so the recommendation reflects what the problem needs rather than what a single specialism is equipped to offer.
Minimally invasive technique is the default where it is clinically appropriate — the large majority of procedures are completed laparoscopically, with robotic assistance in selected cases. Open surgery is used where it is the safer choice, such as severe infection, difficult anatomy or malignancy.

- Abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) — for complex, recurrent and large ventral hernias where a standard repair is not sufficient.
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy — keyhole gallbladder removal for gallbladder stones, including day-care surgery for suitable patients.
- Biliary surgery — the wider field of gallbladder and biliary surgery, including bile duct stones and obstruction causing jaundice.
- Laparoscopic appendicectomy — keyhole removal of the appendix in appendicitis.
- Robotic surgery — robotic-assisted procedures for selected patients, where the added precision changes the operation.
- Laparoscopic fundoplication — anti-reflux surgery for GERD that has not settled on medical treatment.
- Laparoscopic bariatric surgery — weight-loss surgery, assessed as part of the management of obesity.
- Laser treatment for piles, fissure and fistula — day-care anorectal surgery for haemorrhoids, anal fissure and fistula-in-ano.
- Laparoscopic colorectal surgery — for colon disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer.
- Laparoscopic gastrectomy — partial or total removal of the stomach, including for stomach cancer.
- Gastrointestinal cancer surgery — GI cancer surgery spanning gastric, rectal, pancreatic and liver malignancy.
- Advanced laparoscopic GI surgery — complex laparoscopic procedures across the gastrointestinal tract.
- Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy — endoscopy and colonoscopy where investigation or intervention is required.
- Abdominoplasty — performed alongside abdominal wall repair where clinically indicated.
Experience
28 years in gastrointestinal and minimal access surgery, including more than 20,000 laparoscopic procedures. Within that, over 6,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, covering complicated, gangrenous and infected gallbladders as well as routine cases.
Alongside surgery he provides medical management for gastritis, reflux, peptic ulcer, jaundice, fatty liver, cirrhosis, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis and pancreatitis — so patients who do not need an operation are not referred onward to find that out.
